When a research study has been poorly designed, it suffers from systematic error.
Systematic errors are caused by the design of the system, they are not random  and can be eliminated by changing the way in which the experiment was done.
Random errors on the other hand are chance variations in the measurements.  Over this type of errors the experimenter has little or no control.
