A placenta and viviparity are most likely adaptations for increasing PARENTAL CARE AND OFFSPRING SURVIVAL.

The placenta is an organ where the embryo resides. It connects the embryo to the uterine lining of the mother. It also mediates the exchange of nutrients as well as regulate temperature needed for the embryo's development and survival.
