Explanation:

From 1664 to 1674, Berkeley was co-owner of New Jersey. He sold his share to an association of Quakers because he had some political conflicts with Richard Nicolls (New York Governor ) and Carteret. This dramatically split New Jersey into East Jersey, which was under Carteret ownership, and West Jersey. This division continued until 1702 as West Jersey succumbed to bankruptcy and the Crown unified the colony.
