After American Civil War, General Philip Sheridan was assigned to protect and pacify the Southern Plain region which was contant raids by indigenous tribes. To do so, General Sheridan rebuilt and restored several outposts and forts across Texas, New Mexico and Kansas.

He ordered to built Fort Sill to protect the people of Texas and Kansas from the attacks.
